The Face Of Counseling
Building Safe Spaces, One Session at a Time
Shelby Miller, M.A., LCMHCA, first experienced therapy as a teenager growing up on the Outer Banks. After having a hard time finding a therapist, she recognized a strong need in the community for counseling services and saw this as a way she could give back. With a special interest in helping children and young adults, and wanting to provide them a place where they would feel safe, Miller’s passion eventually grew into her practice, Sandcastle Counseling.
After earning a bachelor’s in psychology from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and a master’s in clinical mental health counseling from the University of North Carolina Charlotte, Miller completed a number of internships, which required her to work with a wide variety of people with diverse backgrounds. Through these experiences, Miller gained invaluable on-the-job training, confirming her intuitive feeling that working with children was her true calling.
At Sandcastle Counseling, Miller offers patients warmth, compassion and support through in-person and virtual therapy sessions. Services include play therapy, individual counseling, and couples and family counseling. “It’s not one size fits all, rather I tailor care to each individual and each family,” says Miller. “I adjust how I show up for them based on what they need.”
As for her own personal support system, Miller leans on her family, whom she refers to as a strong, working unit. “I knew I wanted to stay close by to family because they keep me grounded and help me remember who I am.”
Sandcastle Counseling is accepting new clients.
