SPECIAL PROFILE———
Two Restaurants, One Tradition
Top-Notch Meals and Warm Hospitality are the Miller Family’s Recipe for Success
It was 1978 when Eddie and Lou Miller first opened Miller’s Seafood and Steakhouse. As a teenager, their son Brian spent his summers working in the restaurant, getting familiar with the family business. After college, Brian and his soon to be wife, Beth, came back to Kill Devil Hills and began working together at Miller’s.
Brian and Beth officially purchased the restaurant from Eddie and Lou in 2007. A few years later they opened American Pie together, and both restaurants now carry on the Miller family tradition of quality, excellence and hospitality.
“I learned everything about the restaurant business from my parents,” Miller says. “They ran the business together for all those years, and now my wife and I are doing the same.
“Throughout the summer, we’re feeding around 2,000 people a day in our two restaurants. It’s a challenge we embrace every season, and we get a lot of fulfillment from making it all work.”
The Millers focus on two main specialties: high quality foods and unparalleled service. Seafood at Miller’s is fresh and locally caught, and they serve high-quality Angus beef, fresh pastas and homemade desserts. At American Pie, guests enjoy hand-tossed pizzas and homemade ice cream.
“We put a lot of time and effort into ensuring the products we bring in are top-notch,” Miller says. “Our customers know that when they visit our restaurants, they’ll be getting the quality and consistency they’ve come to know and love.”
Customers have also come to know and love the familiar faces at Miller’s and American Pie. The majority of the Miller’s staff have been working in the restaurant for 20 years or more, so visitors who come back to the Outer Banks year after year often feel like they’re coming back to old friends.
The Millers themselves are a dependable presence in the restaurants as well. On a given day during the season, you may find Brian Miller cooking up meals at Miller’s or whipping up ice cream at American Pie. Beth can be found managing the dining room and handling things behind the scenes.
“Things have certainly changed since my parents first taught us how to run a restaurant. We’ve been able to take what we’ve learned from them and also evolve with the changing of the times, and that approach has helped us succeed,” Miller says.
The Miller children are also on the path to success. Gray has committed to attend American University in Washington D.C. and he will be a member of their dive team. The Miller twins have both graduated from UNCW. Shelby is in a graduate program at UNCC to further her education in psychology. Hayley has taken on the role of general manager at American Pie with the intention of carrying on the family tradition for another generation.
