Initially coming to Dare County in 1993, Mr. Buford began working with The Lost Colony productions and directing church choirs. it wasn’t until 2005 that he began a First Flight Elementary teaching job. His roots now run deep within the community he serves. His passion for education burgeoned at a young age, fueled by inspiring mentors who shaped his perception of the profound influence a dedicated educator can wield.
At the heart of Buford’s approach lies an unwavering commitment to nurturing creativity. He believes that every student possesses a unique rhythm, a melody waiting to be discovered. For a number of years, he has even celebrated every Octoberfest with his chorus’ German language production of festive songs fit for Munich.

Students build on their skills and become fluent professional singers who take risks, learn from feedback and ultimately, take pride in their work as a collective team of singers.”

Versatile in the classics, Buford has organized, rehearsed, directed and performed Handel’s Messiah for several years as a fundraiser for Dare County Youth Orchestra.

This fund was set up to help with John’s expenses, allowing individuals to donate directly, without any fees.
