We humans have been fascinated with crime for centuries, and true crime podcasts are a modern extension of that fascination. In the Victorian era, the reading masses devoured Penny Dreadfuls, salacious scandal rags designed to be bodice rippers for the ladies of the day. Thus, swooning to the fainting couch for the delicate of heart defined the story’s success. True crime podcasts of the 21st Century offer a unique insight into the criminal mind and the justice system, satisfying our morbid curiosity about the darker side of human nature.

In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of true crime podcasts, especially those that focus on unsolved murders. These podcasts dive deep into the details of unsolved cases, exploring the clues, suspects, and possible motives. They have gained a massive following, with millions of listeners tuning in every day. One such podcast, CounterClock, is the creation of Outer Banks’ native Delia D’Ambra, whose father is the former Manteo Police Chief, Francis T. D’Ambra, retired.

D’Ambria’s CounterClock is a podcast that has captured the attention of true crime enthusiasts around the world. In the first season of the CounterClock podcast, Delia D’Ambra, explores the unsolved murder of a woman named Denise Floylen Johnson, who was murdered inside her childhood home in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina in July of 1997. The podcast was released in September 2019, and since has garnered a huge following and critical acclaim for D’Ambra’s investigative journalism and captivating storytelling.

One of the reasons why CounterClock has been so successful is because of the host’s dedication to finding the truth. D’Ambra spent years researching the Denise Johnson case, and conducting dozens of interviews with people who were involved in the investigation, including law enforcement officials, witnesses, and family members. Her meticulous research and thorough investigation helped shed new light on the case and brought attention to a crime that had been forgotten by many.

D’Ambra relates that when she initially audits a case for podcast potential, her first need is cooperation from the victim’s family. “(My initial conversation) on any case is with a loved one to get their permission…their cooperation, because it isn’t my story to tell, it’s theirs. That’s the number one priority for me.”

The podcast’s success can also be attributed to its creator’s storytelling and research. D’Ambria earned a degree from the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media with a focus in broadcast and electronic journalism and a minor in creative writing. D’Ambra is a skilled chronicler of the facts, and she has a knack for weaving together complex narratives in a way that keeps listeners engaged. The podcast’s format is also unique, as it follows a sequential timeline of events, building suspense and tension as the investigation progresses.

Delia D’Ambra created CounterClock in late 2018 while still working as a live news reporter for the NBC affiliate in Fort Meyers, Florida. In early 2019, CounterClock was acquired by Ashley Flowers and her fledgling podcast network, Audiochuck. D’Ambra went “all-in” on her podcast efforts as an integral part of Flowers’ growing organization.

Another factor that has contributed to CounterClock’s success is its ability to engage with its audience. D’Ambra frequently interacts with listeners on social media, responding to questions and comments and providing updates on the investigation. This engagement has helped to create a sense of community around the podcast, with listeners from around the world coming together to discuss the case and share their theories.

The podcast’s success has also been recognized by the industry. In 2020, CounterClock was named one of the top true crime podcasts by The New York Times, and it has received glowing reviews from outlets such as The Guardian, Forbes, and The Washington Post.

CounterClock has also spawned a loyal fanbase, with listeners creating their own online communities to discuss the cases and share their thoughts on the investigations covered. Many listeners have praised the podcast for its attention to detail, and its ability to shed new light on cases that have been largely forgotten by the public.

The investigation into Denise Johnson’s murder is ongoing, and new developments in the case are frequently discussed on the podcast. Does Delia D’Ambra believe these cold cases can be solved? “Absolutely! I feel one of the best ways to solve the case, if explored properly, especially with what’s out there now (is) with genetic genealogy and the ability to amplify DNA profiles.” The major factor that has changed since these murders were committed is the increased testing and scientific effectiveness of DNA evidence. But these tests cost money, often not available in dwindling local law enforcement budgets.

With foresight and a plan, Ashley Flowers and her true podcast network, Audiochuck, have created funding grants for such testing costs. Applications should be made through Season of Justice where Delia D’Ambra serves as Board President. “This is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing funding for investigative agencies and families to help solve cold cases.” The grants are a gift to find potential resolution to these unsolved crimes.
The success of CounterClock’s initial season led to the creation of a second season, which explores another unsolved Outer Banks murder case, this one of Stacey Stanton in Manteo, North Carolina from 1990. CounterClock has continued to grow under Delia D’Ambra’s deft skills, currently in its fifth season with season six in production. Additionally, D’Ambra launched another limited series podcast, Park Predators, “focusing on missing or murdered individuals in National Parklands or Forests.”

CounterClock is a podcast that has captivated true crime enthusiasts around the world. The podcast’s success can be attributed to Delia D’Ambra’s dedication to finding the truth, its engaging storytelling, and ability to connect with its audience. Its loyal fan base and critical acclaim are a testament to its impact, and it is likely that CounterClock will continue to be a popular podcast for years to come.
