Summer Bucket List

 In Culture & Events

DSC_0129I know it’s not even March yet but we’ve gotten through the absolute worst of the winter (hopefully…), the days are getting longer, and when I glance out the window I think “wow, it looks warm out there!” even though it’s only 45 degrees. I am READY FOR SUMMER. However, since I can’t actually fast forward to May I thought I’d make a summer bucket list so when it finally gets here I’ll be able to hit the ground running.

  1. Go horseback riding on the beach. I’m either going to make friends with someone who has a horse I can ride (I’m shameless – hit me up if I can borrow your horse!) or get to know the folks at Equine Adventures really well this summer.
  2. Watch the sunset from Jockey’s Ridge. There’s not a better spot in the world for it and I can be there in five minutes. Why am I not doing this every night?? Maybe I’ll fly a kite too.
  3. Sit on my screened-in porch and write. I’ve been saying forever that when I have a screened-in porch at the beach I’m finally gonna finish that novella I’ve been working on for the last eight years. No more excuses.
  4. Learn how to drive a stick so I can take my dad’s Jeep up to Corolla and see the wild horses whenever I want. This one’s pretty self-explanatory. (If you see a tattooed chick in a huge Jeep stalled out and cursing in the Harris Teeter parking lot that’s me. Hi.)
  5. Plant a garden. I do this every year but I’m pretty bad about giving up halfway through July when it gets so hot everything shrivels up and dies. But not this year! This year I’m going to water, prune, and cultivate so that I have fresh tomatoes until October.
  6. Go see The Lost Colony. I love The Lost Colony. I drag people with me to see it every summer and this year won’t be any different. But I’d like to do some of the behind-the-scenes tours too.
  7. NO A/C! For as long as I can stand it. I have lots windows and I’m gonna use them. Probably. #7 might be a long shot…
  8. No grocery stores. Okay, this is admittedly another one that’s kind of a long shot but I’d really like to cut back on trips to the grocery store and buy as much locally sourced produce and seafood as I can.
  9. Go to the beach! I gotta stop taking the fact that I can walk to the beach for granted. It’s completely ridiculous. People spend tons of money to vacation right here in our backyards! I’m gonna get a glorious tan this summer.

I think those are realistic goals! And they will definitely keep me from sitting around in front of the tv with the air conditioning blasting. Are there things you’re looking forward to this summer? Maybe “touristy” stuff that you might not normally do? Any tips or suggestions for me? Leave your feedback in the comments or come chat on Facebook or Twitter
